Universal Ukogi Jujitsu

Overview

Universal – All encompassing
Ukogi – Movement
Jujitsu – Combat art

We call it "Universal" because we study all four positions of fighting.

  • They are:
  • You up; me up,
  • You up; me down,
  • You down; me up, and
  • You down; me down.

Your instructor’s goal is to get you to be comfortable fighting from all four positions.

The 5 level progression of Universal Ukogi Jujitsu is:

  • avoid,
  • escape,
  • control,
  • offense, and
  • super offense.

We study jujitsu as a means of self defense. It involves close in contact fighting and ground fighting. We are not constrained by the rules of sport. This allows us to end a violent encounter quickly. Although the common term is self-defense, we like to call it self-offense. The offensive mindset is very different and it leads to a different style of fighting. Universal Ukogi Jujitsu teaches simple techniques that are repetitively practiced; so that when one is needed your response will be automatic.

Technique groupings

Universal Ukogi Jujitsu divides techniques into different groups. This helps the student understand what is needed for testing and what is just for expanding his or her knowledge of the art. These groups are:

  1. Formal Techniques are techniques that you must test on. For colored belts there are 15 techniques per belt.
  2. Informal Techniques are not tested on; but, they have been accepted into the system of Universal Ukogi Jujitsu.
  3. Set Responses are not directly tested; however, they should show up in the performance of your techniques. Set Responses train you to react properly and in the same way each time to an attack.
  4. Mental Training. For colored belts UUJ uses the 21 concepts of the United States Martial Arts Association’s code of conduct. Mental training is part of the testing for colored belts.
  5. Seminar learning allows the student to expand his or her knowledge of self-defense topics. There is a seminar for learning to use the bokken. The "Martial Bokken" offers three rank levels.
