Tori & Uke

There is not a good direct English translation for Tori and Uke. The best translation is Tori is the taker and Uke is the receiver.  Tori actually performs the technique and Uke receives the technique that Tori performs. However, Uke usually attacks Tori in some way and therefore we say Tori is the taker of Uke’s attack.
